On this day in 1895 a trial began where Oscar Wilde attempted to sue a member of British nobility for calling him a sodomite. Of course, BEING a sodomite that came back to bite him in the ass, and not in the fun way. So proof came through that it wasn't inaccurate to call him a sodomite, and he was sent away to two years of hard labor.

Of course we can't be sent to prison for our gay activities anymore (or at least for the moment), but this is probably one of the best examples for why visibility is soooo important. Be yourself. Proudly. If a literary genius couldn't pull off staying in the closet, who are you to think you can get away with it?
